2013: A Demo Retrospective
Since the birth of the label in 1997, FatCat has always had a solid engagement with material sent to us as demos. Where numerous labels throw demos straight into the trash unopened, at FatCat we've always made an effort to listen to every demo received and discovered several of our artists like Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad in this way.
Whilst we receive a high quantity of demos, our ongoing commitments to an expanding roster of signed artists gives us fewer opportunities to physically release material from new artists. As an antidote to this, we began using our website to showcase our favourite demos online, with artwork and MP3s available for free download in 2004. In 2010, we set up our Soundcloud demo page and in February 2012, the new and improved FatCat demo site was launched with all the featured tracks grouped into collections archived by year.
The choices of who we have asked to join this archive are highly selective, and we make no apologies for this. These are tracks we consider to be really good quality material, tracks that we are happy to help promote and to have associated with FatCat. 2013 has been particularly good year where we have featured 40 new tracks on our demo site. We have helped promote different artists from all over the world and shared with you an eclectic selection of music with genres ranging from glitch to psychedelic rock. Several of these tracks have been picked up by radio stations, blogs, websites and magazines...
As 2013 came to a close, we wanted to invite you to take a look at the great material we’ve been sent this past year. It has always been really exciting to unexpectedly discover something inspiring in this way; we hope you will find much to enjoy on our demo site and will let us hear your thoughts.
We will keep on supporting good new creativity and keep on sharing with you great new music in 2014.
