Record Store Day 2013

FatCat Records are proud to announce three special projects produced in limited editions exclusively for Record Store Day, 20 April 2013.

The Twilight Sad
The Twilight Sad vs Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat Split 7ʺ (7FAT124)
UK & Europe only - Limited to 500 copies
Black litho print on eco-natural recycled board with hand stamped labels

Following last year's hugely successful album No One Can Ever Know: Remixes, The Twilight Sad have teamed up with fellow Scots Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat for a split single which sees the jazz pianist and former Arab Strap frontman produce a low key, piano led reading of Alphabet, the opening track from No One Can Ever Know.
On the other side, The Twilight Sad have re-imagined ‘(If You) Keep Me In Your Heart’ from Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat’s brilliant album Everything’s Getting Older.

	Breton
Population Density / Governing Correctly Remix 12" (12FAT087)
UK & Europe only - Limited to 1000 copies on purple vinyl

London-based outfit Breton have meanwhile issued a one-off 12" of remixes by Artwork and Busy P.
Governing Correctly, taken from last year’s debut album ‘Other People’s Problems’, is a nod to Daft Punk and DFA, common influences for the band as a whole.
“The fact that Busy P was into one of our tracks was such an amazing experience, but when he sent us the remix he had made of it, we all lost our minds, and were in a state of total bliss for days, just playing it over and over again.
Population Density is about making music in a small room that you only share with 5 people, and then finding out that it has outgrown the room and has a life of its own.
The remix is by Artwork and he has turned it into something that sounds like a slab of pure Detroit.”

	Frightened Rabbit
The Midnight Organ Fight / Quietly Now LP (FATLP70XLTD)
Worldwide - Limited to 1000 copies on double heavyweight vinyl

2013 saw Frightened Rabbit achieve breakthrough success with their major label debut Pedestrian Verse, but newer fans may not be aware of what many critics hailed as their first great album, 2008’s The Midnight Organ Fight.
Released here on double vinyl alongside Quietly Now, a live acoustic version of the album recorded in a tiny pub in Glasgow, The Midnight Organ Fight was an instant classic, received with near universal acclaim.
This is the first time The Midnight Organ Fight has been available on vinyl in the US, and the first time Quietly Now has available on vinyl anywhere. Each album will also include one of four limited edition 12" art prints.

They deliver a stirring take on ‘Be Less Rude’, a track that not only features on the Rabbit’s 2007 FatCat album ‘Sing The Greys’ but also on the special split cassette of Twilight Sad/Frightened Rabbit demos and unreleased tracks – limited to 400 copies – released by FatCat on Record Store Day.

FatCat Release Limited Frightened Rabbit/Twilight Sad Cassette for Record Store Day

The fourth annual Record Store Day is on the 16th of April, and FatCat Records are releasing a limited run of handmade cassettes, available exclusively in independent retailers participating in Record Store Day. Entitled ‘Demos’, the cassettes contain very early, previously unheard music by two of FatCat’s most celebrated bands: Frightened Rabbit and The Twilight Sad.

The US version of the cassette is limited to 777 copies, while the UK version is in an edition of 400. In case you can’t find the Sony Walkman you haven’t used since 1997, the cassettes include download codes to access digital versions of the tracks.

The Frightened Rabbit tracks selected for the tape are from the second installment of demos Scott and his brother Grant sent down, the last time they would record their demos to tape. The tracks were selected carefully – ‘Be Less Rude’, single one from their first album, ‘I Feel Better’ and ‘Keep Yourself Warm’ both finally appeared on ‘Midnight Organ Fight’, having sat on the shelves for several years, ‘Snake’ is only more charming thanks to the recording process, and ‘The Greys’, which is for us one of the best demos we received from the band at the time. They perfectly encompasses all that’s great about a demo – an idea, noted down roughly yet displaying the emotion and talent that now shines through Frightened Rabbit’s entire catalog.

It was pure coincidence that Glasgow’s The Twilight Sad started sending music to FatCat at almost exactly the same time. The Twilight Sad’s tracks on this tape are made all the more special due to the fact that this is not only also demo material, but that it will be completely new to the public. None of these tracks made it on to a release of any kind, and have remained sitting in the FatCat vaults. Their sense of songcraft here is self-evidently strong, *James*’s strong vocals over *Andy*’s musical arrangements sound as impressive then as they are today, with Mark Devine on drums, and Craig Orzel on bass providing a powerful backbone. A treat for Frightened Rabbit fans here will be The Twilight Sad’s cover of ‘Be Less Rude’ – re-titled later by the band as ‘Ravishing Rick Rude’.

End Of Year Lists - Frightened Rabbit

Over the Christmas period FatCat will be posting a new end of year list each day. Both staff and artists have made selections and today's artist is…Frightened Rabbit

Meursault – All Creatures Will Make Merry
Folk noise band with the most beautiful melodies I’ve heard all year. One moment it is artfully and brutally distorted, the next, close and whispered.

	Foals – Total Life Forever
An unexpected pleasure, given that I wasn’t a fan of their first record. This one has a depth that I didn’t think they had in them.

Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record
This is my most played album of the year. Intricately produced and perfectly formed. ‘World Sick’ is the finest opening track I’ve heard in a long time

Interesting Interviews With David Davidson and Scott Hutchison

We like to post interviews up on our site for followers of the bands to read. Bits of each interview are interesting, but more often that not you’ll read the same generic interview again and again – asking similar or the same questions to a band or artist who can only repeat what they’ve said before!

It’s with pleasure, then, that i can tell you about interviewer Benjamin Opipari and his site writersonprocess.com

Benjamin is interested in songwriters, and how songwriters go about their job. In this particular interview, David Davidson of Maps & Atlases speaks about topics including how poetry affects his songwriting, how a good long walk is the perfect way to write a Maps & Atlases song, and his penchant for leaving long voice mail messages for friends. Read it here

He also interviewed Scott Hutchison from Frightened Rabbit. Topics such as inspirations, lyrics and routine are covered amongst many others. Read it here

No doubt, we’ll be posting more of Benjamin’s insightful interviews on our site in the future.
