We'd like to start our reflection on 2012 with a gesture of appreciation. Dustin O'Halloran – at his stunning live performance at the Barbican Hall in May this year – mentioned his relationship with FatCat and his label-mates. Though we were pleased, flattered, at the time, it is rare that we have opportunity to return our gratitude and express our thanks to the artists who make our jobs so rewarding, enjoyable and fruitful. So, if you have released a record with us in 2012, worked with an artist, put on a show, allowed us to feature your demo on our mini-site (etc. etc.), you are likely to be on the expansive list of people to whom this small gesture is offered. This would all be a lot more difficult without you.

There was a certain dread of the workload we had set ourselves when we initially wrote out our 2012 release calendar at the end of last year. A brief scan through our release list for the year reveals one of the busiest schedules FatCat has undertaken since its inception. It has included 10 full-length albums – including 3 debut LPs and 2 remix albums – as well as their respective satellite single or EP releases and a handful of short-run limited editions. Happily foiling this, however, is our confidence that plenty of the music here will soon come to represent an important, indelible part of the personality and history of the label, released by artists whose names may eventually serve as real currency in our future endeavours. PAWS, US Girls and Breton – to name just the debutants – might come to be the bands that we mention when opening conversations with a brand new artist whose work we admire.

Our post-classical imprint 130701 recorded another successful year, principally guided by its figureheads Max Richter, Hauschka, Dustin O'Halloran and Johann Johannsson. The latter three composers toured the Transcendentalists triple-headliner across Europe in early May (as mentioned above) to rapturous response, with the accompanying Transcedentalism 12" EP selling out almost immediately. The stable also expanded to include Parisien composer Sylvain Chauveau this year, who released his gorgeous unreleased collection Simple in November. Elsewhere, Hauschka boldly widened his remit beyond the orchestral sphere to release a series of remix EPs (here and here) featuring heavyweight guest collaborators; an album continuing the project followed digitally in November, and will be released physically in February.

We approach 2013 with a similar balance of apprehension and excitement. The release calendar for next year is already beginning to closely resemble the scale of 2012's, but already neatly and satisfyingly mixes new signings with returns from more established artists. Already ready for preview is music from Mice Parade's fantastic Candela album; the long-awaited, aforementioned physical release of Hauschka's Salon des Amateurs remix project; the first single from Ores and Minerals, the follow-up to Mazes' acclaimed 2011 LP. Amazon recently made available a free, 10-track sampler made up partly of forthcoming material, which can be found here.

Following this write-up will be a collection of artists' and staff top ten picks for the year just passed – further reasons to celebrate 2012 in one sense, and a final review in anticipation of 2013 in another.

Dustin O’Halloran scored documentary ‘The Other Dream Team’ out this month

Directed by Marius A. Markevicious this documentary details the struggle of a Luthuanian basketball team who struggled under Soviet rule. The team's efforts turning them into symbols of Lithuania's independence movement and (with help from the Grateful Dead) triumphed at the Barcelona Olympics.

The film will hit selected cinemas across the country on the 28th of September.

New Dustin O’Halloran scored film ‘Now is Good’ out in cinemas this Month

Today sees the release of a brand new EP of collected works by 130701 (FatCat's "post-classical" imprint) artists Dustin O'Halloran, Hauschka and Jóhann Jóhannsson. Titled Transcendentalism, the EP accompanies the triple-headline Transcendentalism Tour that sees the three artists hit the road for the first time together in venues across Europe.

The EP will be available as a highly limited, hand-signed and numbered white-label 12" sold only on Transcendentalists tour dates, with this digital release being the only full-scale publication of the same.

Featuring brand new, exclusive works from all three artists, backed with specially-selected live recordings of special versions and new arrangements of existing pieces, Transcendentalism represents a musical snapshot of Dustin O’Halloran, Hauschka and Jóhann Jóhannsson as the tour approaches: Hauschka performs with touring partner Samuli Kosminen (aka múm’s masterful, Finnish-Icelandic percussionist), O’Halloran and Jóhannsson both realign previously-recorded material to string quartet arrangements in keeping with their respective live sets for the tour.

O’Halloran donates us ‘An Ending, A Beginning’ and a stunning new version of his 2006 piece ‘Opus 28’ (originally found on his second Piano Solos LP) featuring New York’s ACME String Quartet. Hauschka’s contributions – a skipping and melodious new composition entitled ‘Spark’ and an improvised live piece taken from 2011’s Brighton Festival 130701 showcase – demonstrate the breadth and colour with which he collaborates with guest percussionists. Jóhann Jóhannsson is represented by a recent re-write of film-score piece ‘Glíma’ (taken from 2007’s Icelandic feature Bræðrabylta) and a jaw-dropping, KCRW-recorded live interpretation of a second soundtrack composition that sees LA’s Formalist String Quartet perform parts originally written for brass, with breathtaking results.

FatCat’s Dustin O’Halloran has composed the score for director’s Drake Doremus new Paramount release ‘Like Crazy’.

The film which has received several awards including the Grand Jury Prize Award at the Sundance Film Festival is now out in cinemas across the UK.

This is yet another addition to the artist’s extensive film repertoire which includes contributions to ‘Marie Antoinette and ‘An American Affair’.

We are excited to announce that FatCat's 'post-classical' imprint 130701 Records will be represented in live venues across Europe in May by Johann Johannsson, Hauschka and Dustin O'Halloran. Included in this stretch of dates is a triple headline bill at London's beautiful Barbican Hall on May 18th.

Each artist here occupies their own unique outcrop of the broad-reaching 'post-classical' field. Where O'Halloran's hauntingly evocative string arrangements and solo piano pieces gently, quietly break hearts, Hauschka (aka Dusseldorf-based prepared-piano player Volker Bertelmann) experiments playfully, exploratively with timbre and rhythm, allowing extra-textual clicks and tics into his sonic journeys through organic / electronic modernist piano. Johann Johannsson, contrastingly, offers a study of stillness and richness of texture - soft electronics and restrained, harmonic use of a full string quartet subtly permeate and underpin his own sonic collages.
