Following last year's hugely successful album No One Can Ever Know: Remixes, The Twilight Sad have teamed up with fellow Scots Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat for a split single which sees the jazz pianist and former Arab Strap frontman produce a low key, piano led reading of Alphabet, the opening track from No One Can Ever Know.
On the other side, The Twilight Sad have re-imagined ‘(If You) Keep Me In Your Heart’ from Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat’s brilliant album Everything’s Getting Older.

London-based outfit Breton have meanwhile issued a one-off 12" of remixes by Artwork and Busy P.
Governing Correctly, taken from last year’s debut album ‘Other People’s Problems’, is a nod to Daft Punk and DFA, common influences for the band as a whole.
“The fact that Busy P was into one of our tracks was such an amazing experience, but when he sent us the remix he had made of it, we all lost our minds, and were in a state of total bliss for days, just playing it over and over again.
Population Density is about making music in a small room that you only share with 5 people, and then finding out that it has outgrown the room and has a life of its own.
The remix is by Artwork and he has turned it into something that sounds like a slab of pure Detroit.”

2013 saw Frightened Rabbit achieve breakthrough success with their major label debut Pedestrian Verse, but newer fans may not be aware of what many critics hailed as their first great album, 2008’s The Midnight Organ Fight.
Released here on double vinyl alongside Quietly Now, a live acoustic version of the album recorded in a tiny pub in Glasgow, The Midnight Organ Fight was an instant classic, received with near universal acclaim.
This is the first time The Midnight Organ Fight has been available on vinyl in the US, and the first time Quietly Now has available on vinyl anywhere. Each album will also include one of four limited edition 12" art prints.

Breton to release ESCALATION, new photo book and EP

Breton are to release a new book and accompanying instrumental EP.

The book ESCALATION is a 24 page collection of photos taken by the band and friends between 2011 - 2013. It will be limited to 250 copies and can be pre-ordered from the webstore.

The release is to coincide with their exhibition at Proud Camden, running from March 28th - 31st.

A book and ticket bundle is also available, which will give you access to their show at the opening night of Escalation, details and tickets here.

Breton announce live shows

Breton have announced a couple of forthcoming live shows on their Facebook page - 8 May at Nuits Sonores in Lyon (with Mos Def, SBTRKT, AlunaGeorge and more) and 10 May at the exciting sounding Marvellous Islands Festival in Paris.

We'd like to start our reflection on 2012 with a gesture of appreciation. Dustin O'Halloran – at his stunning live performance at the Barbican Hall in May this year – mentioned his relationship with FatCat and his label-mates. Though we were pleased, flattered, at the time, it is rare that we have opportunity to return our gratitude and express our thanks to the artists who make our jobs so rewarding, enjoyable and fruitful. So, if you have released a record with us in 2012, worked with an artist, put on a show, allowed us to feature your demo on our mini-site (etc. etc.), you are likely to be on the expansive list of people to whom this small gesture is offered. This would all be a lot more difficult without you.

There was a certain dread of the workload we had set ourselves when we initially wrote out our 2012 release calendar at the end of last year. A brief scan through our release list for the year reveals one of the busiest schedules FatCat has undertaken since its inception. It has included 10 full-length albums – including 3 debut LPs and 2 remix albums – as well as their respective satellite single or EP releases and a handful of short-run limited editions. Happily foiling this, however, is our confidence that plenty of the music here will soon come to represent an important, indelible part of the personality and history of the label, released by artists whose names may eventually serve as real currency in our future endeavours. PAWS, US Girls and Breton – to name just the debutants – might come to be the bands that we mention when opening conversations with a brand new artist whose work we admire.

Our post-classical imprint 130701 recorded another successful year, principally guided by its figureheads Max Richter, Hauschka, Dustin O'Halloran and Johann Johannsson. The latter three composers toured the Transcendentalists triple-headliner across Europe in early May (as mentioned above) to rapturous response, with the accompanying Transcedentalism 12" EP selling out almost immediately. The stable also expanded to include Parisien composer Sylvain Chauveau this year, who released his gorgeous unreleased collection Simple in November. Elsewhere, Hauschka boldly widened his remit beyond the orchestral sphere to release a series of remix EPs (here and here) featuring heavyweight guest collaborators; an album continuing the project followed digitally in November, and will be released physically in February.

We approach 2013 with a similar balance of apprehension and excitement. The release calendar for next year is already beginning to closely resemble the scale of 2012's, but already neatly and satisfyingly mixes new signings with returns from more established artists. Already ready for preview is music from Mice Parade's fantastic Candela album; the long-awaited, aforementioned physical release of Hauschka's Salon des Amateurs remix project; the first single from Ores and Minerals, the follow-up to Mazes' acclaimed 2011 LP. Amazon recently made available a free, 10-track sampler made up partly of forthcoming material, which can be found here.

Following this write-up will be a collection of artists' and staff top ten picks for the year just passed – further reasons to celebrate 2012 in one sense, and a final review in anticipation of 2013 in another.

Breton Live at the BFI

London Short Film Festival and the British Film Institute have asked Breton to perform live on January 11th 2013 at BFI Southbank.

The band explain the event in their own words:

"We are going to present an hour of cinema, ranging from short films/documentaries and promos we have made over the past year. The films will be soundtracked completely live by Breton and a string quartet.

Since we put this band together and toured our album, we have been astounded by how many of you are amazing film makers, editors, animators and sound designers- We are constantly sent amazing pieces of work by film makers from around the world, and have been waiting for a chance to give one of these artists the platform they deserve to show their work somewhere amazing… Somewhere like the London Short Film Festival at the BFI.

So heres where we want your help:
This show is about the album we made, the people we worked with and the places we have seen, its about our band as a whole, and a huge part of that is you guys.
We want to collaborate with you on a specially made piece.
You provide the film, and we'll provide the soundtrack.
It doesn't matter if its a documentary you made about a local butcher you filmed on your phone, or a home video you made when you visited Peru, a CGI animation or a 4 min tripod shot of your own face- we want to see your films.
The one that blows us away the most, and that we feel could work with the show, will be soundtracked by us LIVE at the BFI cinema in London, with a string quartet on January the 11th.

This offer is open to everybody, regardless of their location, technical ability or budget. It costs nothing to enter, we don't want any money, we just want to show off some of the incredibly talented people that we have met through this music.

Breton at #30 in NME’s Album of the Year list

NME have named Breton's album Other People's Problems at #30 in their list of the best albums of the year.

In January the band are putting on a very special show at the BFI - an "expansive new collaboration with directors, musicians and multi media artists that promises to be a masterclass in audio-visual emersion."

Recorded between festival shows, the single also features 'Governing Correctly', taken from their acclaimed debut album, 'Other People's Problems', as well as a dub remix of the b-side from Ed Banger head honcho Busy P.

New Breton video - Population Density

Recorded between festivals over the summer at Orgone studios, the band road tested Population Density for the first time at the Route Du Rock festival in France last month in front of 7,000 people – it was one of the highlights of the set.

There are two additional tracks on the single – ‘Governing Correctly’, taken from the band’s debut much lauded album ‘Other People’s Problems’ and a dub remix of Governing Correctly from Ed Banger head honcho Busy P.

About the video (made as always by the band’s bretonLABS collective), front-man Roman says:

“We went to route du rock & asked people on twitter & FB if they wanted to be part of a video project. We assumed about 20 people would turned up, but in the end 120 arrived to part of the video.
It was a collaboration between photographers, film-makers and the 120 people who turned up on the day.”

Breton play just one more show in the UK this year, at the Scala – and are currently on a headline tour in Europe.

Breton live on KEXP & European tour dates

Breton have just come back from a headline tour of America, and are about to embark on a tour of Europe, including a show at Scala in their home town of London, on October 24th (tickets here).

While they were in the U.S. they stopped by Seattle's KEXP radio station and did a live session, featuring a performance of new single Population Density.

Population Density is released 5^th November, but is available a week earlier if you pre-order via FatCat’s site here. The single includes a remix by Busy P - of Ed Banger records.

Breton for Carhartt radio

Breton have put together a mix for Carhartt. Roman says, "We wanted to make a mix that had a range of different tracks, rather then just a dance mix. There are some Hip Hop tracks, some dancey tracks, some field recordings, and also some unreleased stuff."

The band are featured in Carhartt's forthcoming Brand Book, with photos and an in-depth interview. In the meantime you can listen to their mix and read a Q&A with Roman here.

Breton announce U.S. fall tour co-headlining with D/R/U/G/S

Breton will be touring the US this fall, starting on September 4th in Washington DC. They'll be co-headlining the tour with D/R/U/G/S. Breton released their FatCat debut Other People's Problems back in April and have been pretty busy since. They've just recorded a remix of Lana Del Rey's track, "National Anthem" (which can be heard here) and recorded their song "Jostle" for a takeaway show on La Blogotheque (watch it here). Pick up a copy of Other People's Problems at any of your favorite local record stores, online retailers, or through the FatCat website, and be sure to check out a show in your area.
