Podcast Part 1: 'Winter Fur' Part 1 is a short mix of music I've made since I began working at Fatcat. It starts out with some improvised audio I made using a basic collection of gear: a contact mic, some delay/ looping pedals, pitchshifter and distortion pedals, a basic synth/drum machine, a sampler and a multitrack recorder. This was an improvised process throughout as I fed different signal sources and loops through various pedals/ automations and tried to alter as many parameters as possible, layering the recording track by track, then editing the results. As the podcast progresses I included some shorter, more rhythmically based pieces I made while hastily preparing for a show up in Scotland, with the mix finishing on some more recent breakcore-inspired tracks.Tracklist:1. This mixtape was compiled by Kemialliset Ystavat. This selection includes randomly selected material from Kemialliset Ystavat cassette archives. The earliest recordingdates back to the mid-90s when the group was born and the freshest thing is a MIDI experiment from January 2009 that starts the podcast. Some of the things you will hear (not in this order):A basement boogie from the 90s and an overdub from the "sick guitarsolos"-tape.A tape piece I made using cassette letter correspondance between mygrandmom living in rural Finland and her cousin who had imigrated tosomewhere in USA. Tapes are from the late 70s. The cousin is talkingabout her new dishwasher (you can hear the sound) and how nice life isnow when you don't even have to wash the dishes. At this point thehouse where my grandmother was living didn't get warm water and had anouthouse. She's talking about a great storm that they had justexperienced and how she thought it might be the end of the world. The first song from our split tape with Wooden Wand &amp; the VanishingVoice including vocals by Amon Dade and something else by Dylan Nyoukis.Excerpts from Tomutonttu playback tapes. Tomutonttu used to playshows where audience members were asked to select two tapes and hewould play them at the same time and then sing and play a keyboard ontop of that.A short snippet from a "hilarious" midsummer hangover radioplay fromcirca 97."Diario" is a song about being a Finnish exchange student in Ecuadorin the mid-90s.Most of the stuff is unknown sounds from 4-track tapes, no idea whenthey were recorded, might be somewhere on some of our albums in some other form.Enjoy,J/KY http://www.fat-cat.co.uk </itunes:summary> <itunes:duration>00:24:37</itunes:duration> <itunes:keywords>Fatcat, Records, Indie, Music, Animal, Collective, Sigur, Ros, Mum, Twilight, Sad, Vetiver, Vashti, Bunyan, Max, Richter, Frightened, Rabbit, Ensemble</itunes:keywords> </item> <item> <title>FatCat Podcast #11 - James Fatcat Podcast </title> <description>FatCast #11</description> <pubDate>Fri, 17 Apr 2009 18:00:00 GMT</pubDate> <enclosure url="http://www.fat-cat.co.uk/_podcast/fatcat_catcast_11_james.mp3" length="92774842" type="audio/mpeg" /> <itunes:author>James Fatcat</itunes:author> <itunes:subtitle>James Fatcat Podcast</itunes:subtitle> <itunes:summary>This is the 11th podcast from Fatcat Records. In their own ways they pioneered new ways that music can be conceived, recorded and performed. Reggae music was the catalyst for sound system culture/bass-led music in general, and was arguably a precursor to rap with it's “toasters” such as U-Roy and Dillinger amongst others. I wanted to record a mix that demonstrates how new artists are still heavily influenced by Jamaican artists of 30 or 40 years ago, sampling or in some cases bootlegging old classic rhythms and bringing them up to date with modern-day rappers/vocalists. It is a testament to the timeless appeal of these crackly vintage recordings that they are still being pressed, bought, sold, sampled, remixed and bootlegged by fresh-faced young artists and music lovers. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. -DJ Cut La Vis.See the tracklist featured in the podcast below:Burning Spear - Marcus GarveyDub Kweli - Garvey Gets ByToots and the Maytals - Funky KingstonThe Nextmen ft. A varied selection of tracks, at times mashed up, ranging from electronic to hip hop to indie. Here are 16 tracks for you to enjoy.Polar Kid's own comments on the mix"This podcast is a snapshot of the music I listen to, and consists of a small number of the artists and tracks that I find inspiring at the moment. Some are all time favourites, such as Radiohead and Cinematic Orchestra. Others I’ve just discovered, such as Stanky and GonjaSufi. Ahead of the release of their debut album ‘Yucca’, to be released 20 June (UK/Europe), and 19 July (US) 2011, here is an hour long collection of tracks chosen by Martin Cohen – Milk Maid songwriter. In his own words: “This is a bunch of stuff I've been listening to for the past 12 months... and some I've not listened to for ages. Most of it's from America and most of it has guitars. Two tracks are from my favourite albums of 2010 (Darker My Love and Women). One song got me into The Lemonheads (Rancho Santa Fe) and one song makes me want to quit writing songs (Morpha Too). I've probably only seen about a third of these bands live. I saw Come last year and had the bass amp pointed at my face for the entire gig so it sucked, plus they didn't play Mercury Falls...it's ace. I'm not sure if I want Milk Maid to sound like a mix of all this stuff or not......I think I just want to sound like Morpha Too.Et Moi Et Moi Et Moi - Jacques DutroncPanic Attack - OFF!Dream - Doug Martch Closer You Are - Guided By VoicesNew America - Darker My LoveEyesore - WomenI'll Feel A Whole Lot Better - The ByrdsMorpha Too (alternate mix) - Big StarNiacin - Caustic ResinSome Of Shelley's Blues - Sam JayneI Get Along Without You Very Well - Chet BakerAll This and More - Dead BoysRancho Santa Fe - Evan DandoReal Gone - FurtherMercury Falls - ComeLonesome Pine - Bill FoxHello Bastards - Part ChimpCanyon Ride - Beachwood Sparks</itunes:summary> <itunes:duration>00:58:56</itunes:duration> <itunes:keywords>FatCat Records, CatCast, FatCat Podcast, Milk Maid</itunes:keywords> </item><item> <title>FatCat Podcast #39 - Side A - Selector Dub Narcotic Presents: Where Monsters Dwell – Snakes on a Plane</title> <description>FatCast #39</description> <pubDate>Mon, 18 Apr 2011 12:30:00 GMT</pubDate> <enclosure url="http://www.fat-cat.co.uk/_podcast/fatcat_catcast_39_calvinjohnson_a.mp3" length="74588869" type="audio/mpeg" /> <itunes:author>Calvin Johnson</itunes:author> <itunes:subtitle>Selector Dub Narcotic Podcast</itunes:subtitle> <itunes:summary> Selector Dub Narcotic Presents:Where Monsters Dwell – Snakes on a PlaneA collection of recentish 45s released by various independent labels from around, mostly the U.S., since that is where the punk music still speaks in new languages. Dark, beautiful, and sincere. These songs illustrate the extremely emotional and sensitive world I and many others live in. The colors are those of the sky at dusk. I find comfort in the angst of Darkthrone and tension of Khanate. Serenity and anticipation (of the love I might one day know) in the voice of Mike VanPortfleet from Lycia. Security strength from my female choices The Voices of First Nations Women... The others hold me still in my youth, beauty and naivety. Enjoy my little moonbeam daydream. Evan Parker, Steve Lacy, Misha Mengelberg, George Lewis, Jamie Muir, Derek and I traveled by van for 3 weeks from Brighton to Edinburgh. George Lewis (then as now always ahead of the pack) brought a walkman. The walkman changed everything. Being able to choose your own playlist and listen to it privately made traveling so much easier. The process of making a personalized "playlist" was laborious, and days were spent making mix tapes (music romances) that compiled music from all over the map. 12-16 tracks usually fit on one side of a cassette so 32 LPs/CDs were chosen from a collection and one track from each was loaded in careful sequence—the wilder the juxtaposition the better. The sequence was crucial and I learned a LOT from making these tapes. Everything you do touches your creativity and there is little doubt that these tapes informed a lot of my own composing, from the file card pieces like Spillane (long form composition as mix tape), the compositions and repertory of Naked City (band as mix tape), the Music Romance series on Tzadik (cd as mix tape) to even perhaps the more recent Masada Marathons (concert as mix tape). Today this method of listening to music is becoming more and more prominent via the iPod shuffle—but there still is nothing quite like a personalized and carefully sequenced "Music Romance." The music chosen here comes entirely from my laptop's library and contains pieces that inspire me, tracks that comfort me, music you may not be aware of and some rarities few people have heard. I used to hear classical music since my childhood. There are many stuffs I really like, this is just top of iceberg. If you ask me next time, I’ve other pieces for you. I, my self make totally different music : create time and space of the moment with ever changing local sound carriers (musicians). This is the thing I’m doing and other things are not my world. Because, I’m against any kind of authorities, establishment which rules “this system” I don’t need answer, don’t need information. I like to be free from everything to find worth of my days which god gave me. I’m out of “this system” and happy about this. I share energy… free energy. "While a few bands are commonly known for representing the Smell scene, what really makes LA DIY great is the eclecticism. The shows here thatinvoke the most enthusiasm are the ones that embrace this variety. Seeing crowds mosh to a techno act, headbang to some harsh noise, andthen dance their asses off to a punk band, all in one night, is an exciting and life-affirming thing. Built upon the Brighton based electronic music artist’s own influences, the result is a mix of downtempo, hip hop and electronic music, with a bit of folktronica, reggae, Sigur Ros and 130701’s Dustin O’Halloran. Some words from the artist:"Here is a selection of music that I have been listening to over the last couple of months. Again, some of these are old favourites such as Four Tet, Jurassic 5 and Sigur Ros. Others I have recently discovered completely by accident, such as Kim Hiorthoey. (I picked up his CD Melke in a record shop in Bergen, Norway after the guy behind the counter excitedly told me how amazing it is). Also, if you get the chance, check out the video for the track Nasa - Spacious Thoughts (feat. Tom Waits and Kool Keith). It will blow your mind. In his own words: 'I wanted to put together a podcast with a strong focus on the rhythmic elements that make electronic genres based around repetition so alluring (Techno and House in particular). Trite a statement it may be, but these are both genres that constantly reinvent themselves, always borrowing from other genres and times, and in turn influencing the wider musical community. All the tracks work well on the dance floor or on your headphones, some being more spaced out, others being more classic examples of the aforementioned genres. I hope you enjoy it!'.1. In her own words: 'This is a little garage-punk mix that I made, that has some songs from my favorite new records from this year like the amazing sophomore LPs from The Men and Mind Spiders, and the debut record from Ketamines. There's also underrated gems from last year in the form of Jack of Heart, and Australian greats Woollen Kits and Royal Headache. And I've put on some of my straight up all time jams from my favorite bands like TV Colours &amp; Assassins 88, whose every release is beyond awesome, School Knights, criminally underrated riffage from Denver, and trash-punk TRMRS from my hometown of LA.' <itunes:summary> The starting place of this is mix conversely was added last. After buying the recent brilliant Black Rain album, I was struck by a soundtrack that genuinely made me feel slightly uneasy and combined industrial and electronic elements. This album was part of a recent trend of me exploring dark electronic music so I wanted combine this with equally unsettling music of a more traditional and structured style.

If you enjoyed the mix then I recommend you check out a website I co-curate; there are more mixes as well as articles and reviews.

<itunes:summary> Our latest podcast comes from radio presenter and musicologist Ian Nagoski. In his own words...

Over the past six years, I've released four CDs and six LPs of music from 78rpm discs. The challenge in making this web stream was not to use a lot of material from the records I've already made (5 of the 20 tracks have been reissued before) and to exploit the fact that there's no notes, no narrative to go with the music. The music here is all from about 1910-1950 and originates in Georgia (in the US), Greece, Poland, Quebec, Switzerland, India, Macedonia, Armenia, Korea, Germany, Turkey, Scotland, Zimbabwe, Italy, Syria, and Mexico.

1. Two Gospel Keys - I Love Travelling

2. Gus Doussas - To Kerogeraki

3. Stefan Shkimba - Lemko Wedding Pt. 1

4. Athanase Beaudry - Noces De Tit Pierre

6. Jakob Ummel and Jodlerklub Thun - Alpufzug

7. Faiyaz Kahn - Kafi

8. Vera Filipova - Kirajdjice Jabandjice

9. Zabelle Panosian - Groung

10. Sinkou Son and Kouran Kin - Songs In Grief

11. Unknown Artist - Canary Song Pt. 1

12. Mahir and Ali - Oyun Havasi

2.Johann Johannsson - An Injury To One Is The Concern Of All (live)
3.Johann Johannsson - Freedom From Want and Fear (live)
